Karuna Award
for Camp Fire Boys and Girls
Karuna Medallian
The Karuna Award is offered to Camp Fire Boys and Girls who pursue and complete the course of study on Buddhism. It is a two-year course of study geared for the Discovery Club or Horizon Club Camp Fire Boys and Girls. At the completion of the second and final year the Karuna Award is presented in a ceremony.
The two-year course covers the teaching of Buddhism on a non-sectarian basis so that it may be pursued by boys and girls of any Buddhist school of thought. However, ample provisions are made so that a particular Buddhist denomination to which the student is affiliated may be emphasized. The course is not only academic but encourages the study and practice of many phases of Buddhist culture, etiquette, and arts.
The word "Karuna" means loving kindness. Compassion, loving kindness, and dana are ideals that are encouraged so that Buddhist Camp Fire Boys and Girls may become Bodhisattvas at heart. A Bodhisattvas is one who deeply cares for all.
Who is Eligible?
Any Camp Fire boy or girl of Buddhist faith in the Discovery Club or Horizon Club may pursue the program. Although the Karuna Award is primarily meant for the Camp Fire members of the Buddhist faith, a non-Buddhist may participate in the program provided permission is granted by their parent
